Concerned Parent: Facebook Showed My 15-year-old Daughter is Sexually Active

The story is written by an
anxious father: I accessed my
daughter's Facebook and
discovered she is doing sexual
stuff with her boyfriend. She's
only 15.
She has been going out with her 16-year-old
boyfriend a few months. I just got a gut feeling
about him from day one. What I read on her
messages has shocked me, even though I know
what teenagers do these days.
They've not had intercourse but she's given him
oral sex. How on earth do I broach this with her
without admitting I invaded her privacy?
My wife says it was most likely mutual but because
she's under age we should report it to the police.
I am wary and feel that will just complicate our
relationship with our daughter and I don't want to
ruin his life.
Recommendations
What kids get up to sexually is always worrying for
parents. The point of the law is to protect those
under-age but it can be very heavy-handed in a
case like this.
But you can raise your worries with your daughter
without involving the police.
Something bothered you enough to make you go
snooping on her Facebook page. Do now what
might have been better to do then - talk to her
about your worries for her, listen to how she feels.
Make sure she understands that she should never
feel pressured to do anything sexually, anything at
all, that she doesn't find pleasurable and satisfying
for her. So many girls are feeling pressured to do
stuff their boyfriends have seen in online
pornography and need to know they have every
right to say, "No thanks."
